Reviews for Counting by 7's

Author: Sloan, Holly Goldberg

Willow Chance is a twelve-year-old genius, obsessed with nature and diagnosing medical conditions, who finds it comforting to count by 7s. She lives a happy quiet life with her adoptive parents until they are suddenly both killed in a car crash and Willow finds herself alone and adrift in a confusing world. However, Willow makes friends with a Vietnamese teenage girl who is accompanying her older brother to the same counsellor as Willow is attending. The Vietnamese family then take Willow under their wing, as does a Mexican taxi driver, and then the counsellor himself. This is an odd book with a group of odd characters who each have their issues which Willow curiously becomes the answer to. The characters are very engaging, particularly Willow, and the story is compelling as it unravels the tragedy, but keeps a light and often quite humorous touch. Very American, yet well-written, uplifting and would be enjoyed by thoughtful girl readers.
