Reviews for Bubble-wrap boy

Author: Earle, Phil
ISBN: 9780141346298

Fourteen year old Charlie Han lives above the Chinese Chippy owned by his parents. Charlie has always been very small for his age, with a high pitched voice and terminal clumsiness he is regularly bullied. He has one friend Sinus, but both of them dream of the world seeing them differently because they have a special talent. Only problem is, when Charlie discovers his talent is skateboarding, his overprotective parents do everything they can to stop him. But when he discovers the secret behind this protectiveness, he becomes more determined, and with Sinus’s help they both hope for popularity, whatever the cost. This is both a very witty and touching tale, often with laugh out loud moments, of coming of age and relationships with both friends and family. Very well written prose and excellent characterisation.

This book is one of the 6 shortlisted titles.

I think that this book was okay but I think it was not the type of book I like

I found this book okay because I liked the themes of friendship and family. I thought the themes could actually happen. The ending was quite a good and happy one.

It was interesting. There was a feel of everyday life throughout the entire book and I liked that.

The book was fascinating because Sinus and Dant became good friends at the end even though they weren't friends in the first place. It's a cool book! Wooooo!

I liked the book because it was fun to read and the plot was easy to follow. I liked the main characters determination.

The book was ok but it's just not my type of book because the main character has got an overprotective Mum who says he can't do a lot of things. For example, he can't go skateboarding at the park when he's really good at it.

Review by Caliph - Chilwell School

I didn't like it because it was like a safety guide and it was really tiring to read because of how his Mum is.

I enjoyed the book because the plot was quite fast paced and I liked Sinus because he never gave up. He always tried to help Charlie.

This book wasn't for me because it went very slow and it dragged on where there could have been a lot more action.

Review by Molly - Chilwell School
This book is rated 3 star

My favourite character is Sinus, who is Charlie's only friend. I like the obvious (but not so helpful) advice he gives Charlie, such as: "breathe deep, look them in the eye, and tell them exactly who you are". I also like how he doesn't take no for an answer from Charlie, and when he makes his point he makes it very clear: 'Point One - you have a board. Point Two - your mum is distracted by all things Dora...'. Even when he's interrupted he goes on to saying 'and Point Three...'. However, although I like the characters Charlie and Sinus, that is really all I like. Personally I think that this book is too slow and it used a small amount of swearing which makes it inappropriate for younger readers. I would score this book six out of ten.

I enjoyed this book because a lot of children would relate to Charlie, I also think this book is quite inspiring and lets children know it doesn't matter what you look like.

I really enjoyed Bubble Wrap Boy. I felt connected to the characters as they were described very well. The plot kept me extremely interested as there was always something exciting and mysterious on every page. The only bit I didn't like was the ending. I felt like everything wasn't neatly tied up.

Review by Poppy - Chilwell School

I found this book uninteresting and confusing. It didn't grab my attention and the start of it wasn't what I expected. The ending was alright and decent but overall I wasn't impressed with this book.

I like this story because it is the ultimate underdog story!

Review by Louis - Chilwell School

I gave Bubble Wrap Boy a 11/25 because I didn't enjoy it and it had a long introduction to the book. On the brighter side, the bit where he totally wrecked the stage made me laugh because it reminded myself of me. Overall I don't think I will read the book again because of the type of genre.

Review by Tegan - Chilwell School

The book was enjoyable and realistic. It was a bit slow and confusing. The characters are believable. The mystery was solved at the end of the book.

Review by Abhishek - Chilwell School

I liked this book because it was good and was a mystery story. However it was a bit confusing at the start but as the book went on it explained what was happening. I was confused when he got wrapped in bubble wrap but it explains later in the story.

This book is very good and is an emotional rollercoaster. It shows wonderfully the dreams, experiences and adventures that Charlie from the Chinese Chippy and his graffiti artist friend Sinus have.

Review by Kieran - Dukeries Academy

I liked this book because it's got comedy in it, especially with his Mum as she's extremely protective over him. But he falls off this skateboard and his Mum arrives and fusses over him, then he gets bullied and wrapped in bubble wrapping!

Review by Georgia - Minster School

I didn't like this book much because at points in the story, I felt like I couldn't connect with the characters. When Charlie was writing about the graffiti I felt like he went on a bit too much. Others who like weird mums and dying aunts may like it and it might satisfy you.

Review by Ruby - Chilwell School

I didn't really like the book because the author over-described bits of the story. Also I thought it would be funny based on the front cover but it only had a little bit of humour.

Review by Caleb - Chilwell School

I didn't like the book as ii over-described many events in the story and kept talking about the same things over and over again. However, when Dora died, I felt sympathetic towards Charlie as he had just lost somebody very close to him.

I enjoyed reading Bubble Wrap Boy because there were unexpected twists and turns in the plot and I didn't know what the book was going to be about from the title. I liked the part where the skateboard whizzed by because it made me happy to know that Charlie knew how to deliver the food for the Chinese Chippy.

Review by Evie - Chilwell School

I enjoyed this book because the plot was very interesting and unexpected. I did not think it was going to be about skateboarding because the title is called Bubble Wrap Boy. The mum was overprotective to Charlie Han and I got annoyed.

This book is about a boy called Charlie Han; a tiny boy whose parents run a Chinese restaurant. Him and his best friend are bullied outcasts. When Charlie discovers his talent for skating he has to keep it a secret from his over protective mum and his quiet dad. When he becomes a skater he is no longer bullied until his mum sees him at the skate park one day. She publicly screams at him. This leads to bullies wrapping him in bubble wrap and him no longer being allowed to skate. When Charlie discovers his long lost aunt Dora the his problems escalate . This is a exciting and interesting book which I couldn't put down. It was quite funny at the same time as being emotional. I would definitely recommend this book.

I would highly recommend this book if you like reality books. It is about a boy named Charlie, Charlie from the Chinese chippy. His over protective mum wouldn't even let him get a proper bike. One day, Charlie saw a boy on a skate board and he immediately fell in love! Charlie borrows a board from his best friends brother. It takes him months till he could actually stand up on it. when his mum found out, she confronted him at the skate park which made Charlie be wrapped in bubble wrap by the skaters. Then he had a phone call saying that his auntie (Dora) was ill but he didn't even know that he had an auntie! Charlie went to investigate. He kept on seeing Dora and then he thought of a plan, he could take Dora to the skate park then his mum would come. With help from his best friend, he managed to show his mum the truth even with the tragedy that came. I really enjoyed this book.

I have mixed opinions on this book. At the start it wasn't very interesting at all, but after a few chapters it started to pick up the pace. I think that the idea of a concealed sister in a nursing home is extremely far-fetched and unlikely, but I also think that that is one of the things that makes it interesting. My favourite character is Dora, because she harbours no grudge against Mrs Han and didn't give Charlie and Sinus away when she had never seen them before, instead acting affectionately towards them. I'm unsure as to whether I would recommend this book to anyone, as it is not actually that interesting for a while, and I didn't really find the majority of the plot that exciting. However, there were some parts of the book that I thoroughly enjoyed, which is why I'm giving it three stars.

I liked this book because of how determined Charlie was to become popular; even when he hit a solid wall he just worked around it. Also, I noticed, as the book progressed Charlie started using cooler language.

I think that Bubble Wrap Boy is a brilliant book with an interesting but unexpected plot. I was surprised when Charlie found out he had an auntie named Dora. My favourite part of the book is when Charlie was playing at the skateboarding competition, and saw his mum in the crowd.

This book was disappointing. It took too long to start and the ending happened all too fast. Although some of the characters had a believable personality. Sinus was my favourite character because his personality changed throughout the book, which made him interesting. Also this book had mild swear words in, which I found were unnecessary and this made my feelings change about the book.

I dilsliked BWB because it had a very slow start. I felt that if it had been faster paced and the plot was more interesting, I would've had the will to read it more. Although I didnt like this book, I recommend it to people who like to read over time and dont mind if it's slow.

"Bubble-wrap" is an appropriate title. This book covers you in layer after layer of bubbly-film and refuses to let you go until you've finished. Occasionally a bubble will pop and you can feel everything deflating around the characters, but it always surprises you. At the very end, when you realize it's over, all the bubbles simultaneously explode and you're left shell-shocked, in full book-hangover mode. It takes forever to peel off the remnants of the bubble-wrap and accept that you are no longer in book-world

Bubble wrap boy is a very good book that has a kind of mystery to it. Charlie doesn't seem to have a talent, but when he sees people skateboarding, he knows it's for him. All is going well until a horrible turn of events take place and wedges itself between happiness and sadness. I think that this book is amazing and people should read it.

I think 'Bubble-wrap boy' is a boring, repetitive and unimaginative book. This book is a copy-cat of some much better books and I am surprised that it made it in to the shortlist. I would not recommend this novel to anyone because it is a poorly written, unoriginal book.

This book was hilarious and emotional at the same time and showed a diverse mix of a stereotypical teenage boy and his desire for acceptance. The relatable wish for normality, mixed with the extreme way of gaining it was extremely interesting to read. The storyline following Dora was also fascinating and brought me to tears at one point. I thoroughly enjoyed this book.

At first the book was quite slow, but after about three chapters it picks up the pace. In many ways the book is similar to 'Stanley Carrot', as the plot involves deception. It's about a boy who's rubbish at first, but a hero at the end. In other words, this book has a very unsatisfying beginning but a very satisfying ending.

I enjoyed this book because it is quite realistic and it could happen any where near you. I was a let down because the plot wasn't that exciting and it wasn't very adventurous. If you seek books where there is a lot family drama this is the book for you.

Wow! I really enjoyed this book and I felt included in the story; the characters (especially Charlie) where very entertaining and funny. My favourite character was Charlie's mum because she was mysterious and I felt as if she had an air of mystery around her. If I could change one thing about the book I would make Charlie's dad more confident and allow him to stick up for himself. Moreover, some characters eg: his friends at the skate park, surprised me with their emotions and how well they could wrap a boy in bubble wrap! It was as if they had already done it before!? Overall, I believe that this book is very interesting and I would recommend it to any reader who enjoys a book with a twist and air of mystery around it. This book is worth a read for any budding young reader out there. :)

At times I enjoyed 'The Bubble Wrap Boy', and other times I found it quite boring. One of the reasons for this is because I'm not even slightly interested in skateboarding. Another reason is because it's so far fetched; things that are so unlikely to happen in real life they made me cringe. My favourite character was Dora because she seemed really sweet and she reminded me of my Granddad, always laughing at really bad jokes. I also liked Mrs Han who reminds me of my Mum, who is also very over-protective (though not quite that overprotective!), she also has her reasons for this, but Mrs Han did make me laugh. I would not recommend 'The Bubble Wrap Boy' but I did enjoy reading it. Parts made me laugh and parts made me a little bit sad. Overall, it wasn't too bad.

I think The Bubble Wrap Boy is a good book. It can sometimes be funny and it’s like an adventure to find out what he is good at. He finds out his talent is skateboarding but the thing is his mum says he is very clumsy. He lives above a Chinese chippy, he is quite small for a 14 year old. With the help of his friend he keeps trying to skateboard but the main thing stopping him is his over protective parents! My favourite character is Sinus because he is funny, I just really like his character. I am going to give this book 3 or 4 stars because it is not really my type of book and I just like to read different types.

To be honest I didn’t really enjoy this book as it confused me and it wasn’t that interesting. But I do have some positive opinions on this book too. My favourite character is Charlie because he finds something he really enjoys to do and he doesn’t let anyone get in his way of doing what he loves. He doesn’t even let his mum interfere! I felt like I could relate to the main character in this book because people sometimes interfere when I’m doing something I enjoy like Charlie’s situation! Overall this book is not the best or the worst but I enjoyed some of it.

When I first read the blurb, I thought that this book was going to be really boring, as it didn't sound very exciting at all and when I started to read it, I was right. It was super-confusing and I didn't really get into the story at all; it made me really sleepy. It's one of those books where you can't really remember anything that happened. The only thing that I can currently remember is that there's a boy called Charlie who's really short, loves skateboarding and lives above a Chinese chippy. To make this book better, I would slow it down and structure the words differently.

Review by Isobel - Colonel Frank Seely Comprehensive School
This book is rated 3 star

I quite enjoyed this book because it was rather interesting, but I was also disappointed with it. I was disappointed because the secrets weren’t as exciting as I thought they would be, and the ending was unsatisfactory. The plot seemed almost too straight forward and simple. Also, in my opinion, some of the parts involving Sinus (Charlie’s best friend) were a bit disgusting concerning the acts of his abnormally large nose. Despite this, my favourite part was when Charlie finally found out that he was not worth nothing. My favourite character is Dora (a very special character because through all her suffering she is still able to laugh and notice the beauty in the world, even when it’s dark. E.g singing birds). I would also recommend this book for anyone. On the other hand, stereotypically, I believe this book will be of perhaps more interest to boys because it has a lot about skateboarding and it’s a male narrative. Those who enjoy books on family and sport would especially like this book. It was quite sad at one point, so if you do not like that, I don’t think you should read this book.
