Anna Covey is a 'surplus'. She should not have been born. In a society in which ageing is no longer feared, and death is no longer an inevitability, children are an abomination. Like all surpluses, Anna is living in Grange Hall and learning how to make amends for the selfish act her parents committed in having her. She is quietly accepting of her fate until, one day, a new inmate arrives. Anna's life is thrown into chaos. But is she brave enough to believe this mysterious boy?

This book was amaxing! I just could not stop turning the pages over. I got realy glued to the book every minute had a cliff hanger. I would recommend it to anyone who likes a tiny bit of adventure, secrets, and anyone who likes reading about sneaky children.

The Declaration is a good book but it is some times really weird because it's about the future. I dont want to live for ever though like people in the book. :) I love this book !!!!!! The people that dont like it should be ashamed of them selfs because this is a good book !!!!!

It was a brilliant and emotional book. It does give you an idea of the future. It makes you realise that there is a whole other world outside.

I think the Declaration is a brilliant book and i'd recommend it to anyone especially somebody who likes a good book which makes you think. the auther really brings out the character's personality's even the non-main ones. Also, the good thing about the book is that the storyline is quite interesting and you can feel Anna's emotions throughout it.

Review by katerina - Nottingham Girls' High
This book is rated 5 star

The Declaration is very emotional. At the beginning Anna thinks herself very important and she gradually realises that she isn't so important. The end is very sad but happy at the same time. I thought the storyline was very strong. Once I started to read it I couldn't put it down. I found this a very enjoyable book. The best part was where Anna and Peter were on the run from the authorities after escaping from Surplus Hall. People will like this book if they like tension in stories, but not if they don't enjoy sad stories.

What I liked best about the book was that you never knew what to expect and it was very exciting. I felt the blurb was useless and you need to read a couple of chapters to get into the book.

It was ok but went a bit off the story line at times and too much happened at once then in other places nothing happened.

I thought it was a mega book. It was full of imagination. It also contemplates what could happen in the future. I think it is one of the best books I've ever read (I have also read the sequel to this). I loved its imagination and its structure.

I didnt really like this book as I found the characters vain and the story hard to get into and diffficult to believe. When I first saw the cover I was almost fighting to get it out thinking 'YES a girly book' but by the end I was ready for it to be over

Review by Sophie - Nottingham Girls' High

This was a really good to book to read as it was very interesting as it really could happen in the future. Even though Anna was nothing like us I felt I was able to empathise with her and she was a very well thought out character. The only bad thing I have to say about The Declaration is the fact that it doesn't seem to flow in the way other books do.

The Declaration is a book that has a imaginative story line. Therefore, I thought that this book was really good as the plot was interesting and different. However, some of the characters could have exciting personalities. Also, the plot could have been more exciting too.

Good- original, and a nice look into the future of Britain- a look that is almost post apocalyptic. The only book that comes even close to challenging Skullduggery's crown

This book is amazing! It was really gripping- I couldn't put it down. I thought it was really interesting to imagine what would happen in the future, and if we could live for ever. I would really recommend this because it is emotional, but adventurous.

I really enjoyed this book and it definately lingers in the memory. One of the best things about it is that you feel passionate about what the characters are going through. The description througout the book makes you feel like you're there. I also enjoyed the sections of Anna's diary as it was a window through which you could see her thoughts and how they changed through the book.

Review by Freya - Nottingham Girls' High

wow!!! This book is really great. I was sceptical about it at first because it didn't look like the type of book that I would read but it really got going. I found the relationship between Peter and Anna really moving and the story line that went with them kept me hanging on the edge of my seat. There was a surprise in every chapter I think that is why I enjoyed it so much. The beginning of the book was so shocking but mesmerising that I had to find out what happened. I would recommend the book to anyone because I simply love it.

This book was ok.But not my type.It has some good features to it like suspense and some unhappy feeling I feel as though girls would like this book more than boys. But i got really bored!I think that if you read this that you won't really get into it.I got really confused at some points i really thought it was quite hard to understand this is why i rated the book a 2.To be honest this shouldn't be in the brilliant book awards!... Well thats in my opinion. Take a read of it though!

A certain 5 stars! The best book I have read in ages! In fact, probably the best book I have read ever!!!! I loved how the ending linked back to the beginning and how everything in between fitted together. I think every person aged 12-15 should read this book. Especially if they're not really into books. This will certainly change their minds! The author made perfect characters and a perfect book. There wasn't one dull moment. It was magnificent and I definitely recommend it to anyone who likes a good, long read with a feel-good ending.

'The Declaration' by Gemma Malley is a great book, i would highly recommend it. It's about a girl called Anna who wasn't meant to be born because if you had signed the Declaration (took longetivity drugs to keep them a live forever) you weren't allowed a child. Anna's parents had her so she was sent to Grange Hall and she was a Surplus there, they worked as slaves. But one day everthing changes for Anna! I love this book it keeps you guessing what is going to happen next.

I didn't really like the declaration although it is not really my type of book. When I first looked at the cover I thought it would be really interesting. To me, it kind of goes on a bit and it focuses on one thing for ages. Near the middle, I nearly almost forgot what the story was about. This book isn't for me.

The Declaration is an amazing book. If any book deserves this award then it's this book. I was really enchanted by this amazing book. I was gripped from the first page to the last page. I think that that the book Declaration is really good. I gave it a four because the beginning was a little dull but the end was fab. I think the bit when Peter arrives is good because it is mysterious and it is so interesting. I also like it because it has a lot of mystery and adventure in it and that is mainly what pulls the book all together. I would recomend the book to 11-15 year olds because it has some really difficult words in it and some good vocabulary.

The auther had written the book beautiful the characters were displayed very nicely. The thing I liked the best was the beginning were she said "My name is Anna, My name is Anna and I shouldn't be here. I shouldn't exist, But I do". Because then it becomes freaky

Review by Cory - Queen Elizabeth's Academy

I found this book to be thrilling and it had a lot of plot twists but unfortunately, once a little bit of the plot seeped through I could predict the end easily. I could not see the final ending coming but I could tell how Peter's and Anna's relationship was going to turn out. I got into this book quite easily and after a few chapters I was hooked. I did feel, however, that at certain points it was stuffing information down my throat. I reckon this book will come 2nd or 3rd!

I didn't like the story because the book seemed to go on about the same thing for TOO LONG! The idea of the sory with the declaration and surpluses was a great idea in the long run. Though after a while i got bored and had to ditch the book. I did not complete the book as it was not liked to my personal taste. i would recommend this book to anyone because it's about what you like to read. Even though i didn't like the book because i think it wasn't that good, i liked the main story. It would be better if someone was to re-write the whole book and make it shorter keeping the story the same but cutting down in the detail.

We have all read Declaration and we all agree it wasn't the best of books we have ever read. The story line dragged on quite a bit, especially the journey to London. The main character wasn't that interesting and you don't know what she looked like. She also changes too much during the book.

I think this book is very good and you never know what is going to happen next the character Anna says at the begining that she has done something really wrong because she should have never existed. That makes you wonder whether everything in her life is going alright. She also has this secret diary that she hides away each night because she doesn't want to get in trouble for breaking the rules.

This is a refreshingly different Book, but I thoroughly enjoyed it. It's not your average book. You need full attention while reading it, because there's alot of minor details that you can't miss. The Declaration is written in diary style by a girl called Anna. The book is written in the future, 2140 To Be Precise. It kept me reading, all the way. Great book, best one I have read so far and the imagination and plot does it all. The idea alone is probably the greatest thinking behind a book. It has a brilliant background but for some reason I think the writer actually did not pull it off. The author had such a great idea but I believe the book could have been better if perhaps Peter was the main charachter and if it was in 1st person. However I realise why the author wrote the book this way. It's so unique and nothing will ever be related to it. I think that it doesn't fall into a genre because it has so many elements to it. This Book should win the award without a doubt!
